Scottish-born Newfoundland Artist, Educator & Advocate

Julia Pickard was best known for her colourful, expressive paintings that often showed flowers and nature in an abstract way. She didn’t paint things exactly as they looked but used bold colours, texture, and loose brushstrokes to capture the feeling and energy of the subject. Her work mixed structure and spontaneity, turning simple themes like wildflowers into lively, emotional pieces of art.

Julia Pickard (née O’Connell) was born on April 15, 1936, in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She studied at the Limerick School of Art and the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1959 with first place in pictorial design.

In 1970, she moved to Canada, first living in Toronto, where she continued her studies at the Artists’ Workshop and Sheridan College. She later settled in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and refined her printmaking skills through workshops at St. Michael’s Printshop.

Her work was exhibited widely across Canada and internationally, with pieces held in both public and private collections. She was also an educator, juror, and arts advocate, serving as chair of the Newfoundland & Labrador Arts and Letters Committee and as a board member of LSPU Hall, Eastern Edge Gallery, and The Rooms.

Julia Pickard passed away peacefully on November 25, 2014, in St. John’s. She is remembered as a gifted artist, dedicated teacher, and generous community leader whose creativity and compassion continue to inspire Newfoundland’s cultural landscape.
