Important 2001 Leigh Smith “Winged Harmony” Talking Earth Pottery Vessel

Hand-carved at the Talking Earth Pottery studio on the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, this 6-inch vessel showcases the exceptional freehand sgraffito work of Mohawk ceramicist Leigh Smith. Set against a stippled cream background, the shoulder features multiple highly detailed hummingbirds feeding on blooming honeysuckle vines. The lower third of the pot transitions into a striking sequence of traditional, hand-incised geometric bands. It stands as an exceptional exhibition-grade example of contemporary Indigenous studio art.

Curatorial Note: It is historically profound to exhibit this piece alongside our 1974 Tessa Kidick Globe Vase. During the mid-20th-century post-war era, Kidick actually worked directly alongside studio founder Elda “Bun” Smith to help structurally revitalize the traditional Six Nations pottery movement, making these two pieces interconnected landmarks of Canadian craft history.
