ROBERT FORD GAGEN RCA, OSA, CSPWC (1847-1926)
Scene: “Harbour with Boats”
Size: 6 3/4”x 9 3/4” (11 1/8”x 14”framed) ………..$1250.00
This serene harbour painting by Robert Ford Gagen captures a quiet moment of boats moored alongside wooden docks, their reflections shimmering in still water. Gagen’s delicate handling of light and atmosphere brings calm and clarity to the scene, perfectly balancing soft blues, greys, and warm earth tones.
A founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists and a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, Gagen was one of Canada’s foremost painters of marine and landscape subjects. A beautifully composed piece that brings both history and tranquility to any setting.
Robert Ford Gagen, known professionally as R. F. Gagen, was born on May 10, 1847 in London, England and immigrated with his family to Canada in 1862, settling in Harpurhey (now Seaforth), Huron County, Ontario.
Early in his career he was taught drawing and painting by William Nicoll Cresswell beginning in 1863. He subsequently moved to Toronto where he furthered his training—he entered painting classes under George Gilbert (artist).
In 1872, Gagen took a position with the firm Notman & Fraser in Toronto, where he worked on watercolour portraits and miniatures based on photographic records.
Gagen became a prominent figure in the Canadian art scene. He was a founding member of the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) in 1872, later serving long-term as its secretary. He also became an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (ARCA) in 1880 and achieved full membership (RCA) in 1914/15.
His travels were extensive for his time: Gagen worked throughout the Canadian maritime provinces, in the St. Lawrence region of Québec, and also across the U.S. eastern seaboard (Maine, Massachusetts) as well as in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, Scotland and Switzerland.
He died on March 2, 1926, in Toronto, leaving a legacy of marine and landscape painting that helped shape Canadian art in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Gagen was chiefly known for his seascapes and coastal vistas, though he also painted inland landscapes. His technique, particularly in oils and watercolours, reflects a sensitive attention to light, atmosphere, rock formations and the interface of land and sea.
Although Canadian-born artistry often emphasises wilderness and the North, Gagen’s frequent visits to the American east coast—particularly Gloucester, Massachusetts—gave his marine views a distinct character. His paintings often blend rugged Atlantic rock, turbulent surf, sailing craft, and changing skies with harbours that offer shelter and calm.
His work is held in high regard and appears in major Canadian public collections (e.g., the National Gallery of Canada) as well as numerous private collections and exhibitions.
