Montreal painter Richard Montpetit is celebrated for his luminous, impressionist-style depictions of city life. In this intimate, small-format work, he invites the viewer to feel as though they are looking out onto a quiet winter’s day — a fleeting urban moment rendered with warmth and sensitivity. Born in Montreal in 1950, Montpetit is the son of noted Quebec artist Rolland Montpetit, and his own son, Raphaël Montpetit, continues the family’s artistic legacy in a similar painterly style.
Richard Montpetit is largely self-taught and has been actively painting since the late 1970s. He is best known for his impressionistic landscapes and urban scenes that explore the effects of light and time.
Montpetit’s early plein-air landscapes, painted in Quebec and abroad, gradually developed into the atmospheric city views for which he is now recognized — Montreal streets captured at dusk, in rain, or under winter light. His confident brushwork and refined palette reveal a strong sense of structure and mood, turning ordinary urban settings into moments of quiet beauty.
A respected figure in contemporary Canadian painting, Montpetit has exhibited widely across the country, including a retrospective at the Musée Marc-Aurèle Fortin. His paintings are found in many private and public collections, and he continues to live and work in Eastman, Quebec. Collectors value his ability to express both the character and calm of city life with honesty and sensitivity.
