William (Bill) Duma, 1936 RCA, ASA
Title: DARK WINTER WATER
Size: 12” x 16” ………$1200.00 Canadian
This compact, 12” x 16” study captures a cold, moving stream framed by snow and shadow — a moment of stillness carried in the push of deep blue water and the crisp planes of winter banks. Duma’s tight, assured brushwork and cool, layered palette make the scene feel immediate and intimate: the picture reads like a close-up study of light on water and ice, perfect for a collector who values strong design and seasonal atmosphere.
Born in Calgary in 1936, Bill Duma is a respected Alberta landscape painter known for his strong sense of design and the quality of light in his work. He earned an Honours Diploma from the Alberta College of Art in 1962 and spent a year travelling and studying in Europe after graduation, experiences that informed his mature approach to composition and colour.
Duma has been an active member of the Alberta Society of Artists and was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1995. His practice focuses on Alberta’s landscapes — often fall and winter scenes — rendered with expressive brushwork and a clear, disciplined structure that balances colour and form. His paintings appear in private and public collections and regularly surface in Canadian galleries and auctions.
Collectors are drawn to Duma for his consistent ability to translate northern light and seasonal mood into compact, well-composed works that suit both intimate interiors and larger collections. “Dark Winter Water” is a fine example of this focus: it delivers dramatic winter lighting and assured handling in a size that fits easily into any room while still making a strong visual statement.
