Artist Biography
William Biddle (1937 – 2023) was a highly accomplished Canadian landscape painter, illustrator, and educator. Raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Biddle demonstrated exceptional talent early in life, moving at just 14 years old to study drawing and painting at the prestigious Art Students League and the American School of Design in New York. Over his celebrated career, he balanced working as a prominent commercial illustrator with fine art studio work, running his own illustrative firm and designing iconic book covers for the Harlequin romance series.
Deeply dedicated to the arts community, Biddle shared his expertise by teaching drawing, acrylics, and watercolours for over two decades at institutions such as the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto, the Dundas Valley School of Art, and centers across Mississauga and Oakville. His landscape paintings are celebrated for their blend of nostalgic realism and soft atmospheric impressionism, beautifully capturing the raw textures of Ontario’s waterways and forests. Today, his original works remain highly sought after by collectors of 20th-century Canadian art.
