About This Piece
This is an original mid-century photo print capturing Toronto’s skyline on a winter night in the 1950s. The shot was most likely taken from a rooftop north of Grange Park, looking south-southeast across the city.
Night photos from this era are incredibly hard to find. Before modern digital cameras, capturing a clean midnight panorama like this required heavy large-format film cameras, long exposure times, and precise darkroom developing to keep the city lights from completely blurring out. The print has excellent contrast, showing the glowing windows of downtown against the dark, low-rise houses of Elm Street in the foreground.

Dating the Photo
You can trace the exact era of this photograph through the buildings on the horizon:
- The Canada Life Building (Left): You can see the weather beacon tower lit up on top. This beacon was first switched on in September 1951, which gives us our starting date.
- The Bank of Commerce (Center-Left): At 34 stories, this was the tallest building in the city (and the British Empire) when it opened in 1931.
- The Royal York Hotel (Right): Brightly lit on the right side of the frame, dominating the skyline alongside the old financial district.
- What’s Missing: The horizon is completely clear of modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers. The black Toronto-Dominion towers weren’t built until 1967, and the mid-60s hospital expansions haven’t cleared out the old residential neighborhood in the foreground yet. This places the photo squarely in the mid-to-late 1950s.
