Local contemporary artist Anton (Tony) N. Akkerman received his art diploma in his native country of Holland. In 1957 he moved to Canada settling in Northern Quebec, but after 9 years he moved to the Niagara Region. He has won many local awards and received numerous commissions. He is well know for his exceptional watercolour paintings of scenes in the Niagara area of which some have been reproduced as prints. Such as the Welland Canal historical print series, 1984 produced as an Ontario Bicentennial project for the St. Catharines Standard.

Anton was a draftsman for Acres, W.P. London and Monenco Engineering firms. He shared his love of painting and was a art teacher at Niagara College.  He died January 7, 2010 in his 83 rd year.
