Thomas (Tom) Albert Stone 1896-1978

 

Beautiful circa 1933 plein air painting of the MacKenzie River, Thunder Bay by Thomas Albert Stone. Painting is on a wood panel and retains the original artist label on the back which reads, “ MacKenzie River” “Thunder Bay” “Tom Stone” “ 2 Yorkville Ave”. The artist live at 2 Yorkville Ave between 1930 to 1936. Painting measures approximately 12” x 16”, frame measures approximately 16 1/2” x 20 1/2”.

Tom Stone studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto and in 1925 was awarded the Governor General’s Award for being that year’s outstanding student. He furthered his studies under Andre L’Hote at his Academie in Paris, France and at the Academie Moderne, Paris. The artist exhibited a total 15 paintings at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts between the years 1923 to 1943. He was also a member and director of the Ontario Society of Artists in the 1930’s and continued actively painting until his death in 1978.

Know for his rural scenes of northern Ontario, Stone trained and worked with some of Canada’s most interesting artists (G. A. Reid, A. Lismer, J. W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, F. H. Varley).
