Theo and Susan Harlander were German-born ceramic artists who immigrated to Canada and established the Brooklin Pottery Studio in Brooklin, Ontario, in 1952. Their work introduced a bold European modernist aesthetic to Canadian studio pottery, setting them apart from the more traditional British-inspired styles of the time. Working as a team, Theo threw the forms on the wheel while Susan decorated them with distinctive sgraffito designs—intricate patterns incised through slip or glaze to reveal the earthenware beneath. These designs often wrapped gracefully around the vessels, creating a harmonious blend of form and decoration.
The Harlanders produced custom household pieces and striking decorative works, including monumental vases, chargers, lamps, and sculptural forms. Their pottery is celebrated for its craftsmanship, originality, and timeless appeal, and examples can be found in major collections such as the Gardiner Museum and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Each piece reflects their commitment to artistry and design, making Harlander pottery highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century modern ceramics.
Owning a Harlander piece means owning a part of Canadian craft history—a fusion of European elegance and Canadian innovation that continues to captivate with its beauty and authenticity.
