This rare, museum-quality pair of monumental table lamps represents a tour-de-force of mid-century Canadian studio craft by the legendary husband-and-wife duo, Theo and Susan Harlander. Working from their acclaimed Brooklin Pottery Studio in Brooklin, Ontario, the couple pioneered a highly unique European modernist design ethos within post-war Canadian ceramics.

Massive in presence, each lamp was masterfully thrown on the wheel by Theo Harlander to form a grand, architectural bottle silhouette. The exterior showcases Susan Harlander’s signature freehand sgraffito technique, where intricate, incised geometric, abstract, and figural-esque scratch patterns are meticulously carved through an earthy slip coat down into the earthenware ground. Clad in a muted olive-gray and cream matted glaze, the designs wrap flawlessly around the circular vessels, showing Susan’s peerless grasp of three-dimensional form and texture.

Unlike standard functional wares of the era, the Harlanders specialized in custom-ordered architectural statements. Finding an original, identically styled pair of this monumental scale surviving together in immaculate vintage condition is an exceptional rarity. Arriving from Germany in the early 1950s, Theo and Susan Harlander established the Brooklin Pottery studio in 1952 in Brooklin, Ontario. They introduced a highly sought-after continental, design-centric European modernism that directly expanded the scope of early Canadian studio pottery away from traditional British functional traditions.

The studio functioned as an ideal creative marriage: Theo operated the potter’s wheel to throw the clean, sculptural volumes, while Susan executed the complex hand-decorated surfaces and whimsical sgraffito imagery. Today, their landmark works are highly collectible and represented in prestigious permanent public museum collections nationwide, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Royal Ontario Museum.
