An exceptional, museum-grade showcase example of mid-century Canadian modernism crafted by legendary Niagara regional ceramicist Tessa Kidick (1915–2002) at her historic Jordan, Ontario studio. Dated 74 (1974), this prominent wheel-thrown stoneware globe vase exemplifies the peak of Kidick’s mid-career technical and artistic mastery, moving far beyond traditional functional pottery into the realm of brutalist studio sculpture.
The vessel is defined by a meticulously hand-incised, chattered diamond lattice grid stretching dynamically across its bulbous, closed architectural form. The body is clad in a dramatic, high-contrast mottled brownish-and-white volcanic crawl glaze that parts flawlessly along the textured lines to accentuate the organic rhythm of the clay beneath. Reflecting the raw nature of its mid-century studio kiln environment, the piece displays a characteristic thinly glazed area at the flared rim opening alongside sparse, minor unglazed spots nestled natively between the deeply incised segments of the body.
The underside terminates in a highly decorative, tool-cut “chirped” foot showcasing a beautifully sharp, hand-incised surname signature and dating. An incredibly rare, important masterwork by an influential pioneer of Canadian studio ceramics.
Condition: Excellent Vintage Condition
•Glaze Characteristics: Displays a thin, native glaze application around the outer edge of the flared rim opening, typical of hand-dipped studio firings.
•Surface Variance: Features a few minor, minor-sized unglazed glaze skips nestled safely inside the deep recesses of the incised diamond body, occurring organically during the kilning process.
•Structural Integrity: Free of structural cracks, breaks, fractures, or chips. The delicate, tool-cut sawtooth “chirped” foot is perfectly preserved.
