Rowland Hill is known for his traditional Irish landscapes, most notably the northern region of Ireland. However, he also produced a number of wonderful nautical scenes, such as “STIFF BREEZE OFF BANGOR” we have for sale above. The scene depicts a sizeable sailing yacht off the Bangor coast of Ireland, its crew enjoying an outing for the day.
Rowland Hill (1919–1979) was a distinguished Irish landscape painter, born in Belfast, whose work beautifully captures the natural beauty and rural charm of Northern Ireland. He trained at the Belfast College of Art and began exhibiting at a remarkably young age — at just 16, three of his oil paintings were accepted by the Royal Ulster Academy. In 1964, he was elected as an Associate of that same academy (ARUA), and over his career, he exhibited 17 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1935 and 1966.
Residing in Jordanstown, County Antrim, Hill frequently embarked on painting expeditions with fellow artists Theo Gracey and Padraic Woods, drawing inspiration from the rugged coastline, cottage-studded hillsides, and distant mountain ranges. His canvases were sold through respected galleries such as Magee Gallery in Belfast and the Cooling Galleries in London and Toronto, giving his work both local resonance and wider exposure.
Hill’s paintings are celebrated for their lyrical realism, combining structural precision with a lyrical sensitivity to light and atmosphere. His landscapes — often of coastal scenes, mountain vistas, and rural cottages — convey both quiet intimacy and timeless strength, placing him among the most beloved Irish painters of his generation.
