Rowland Hill (1919 – 1979) ARUA
Scene: ” Fishermen ”
Size: 24″ x 36″ ( 30 1/8″ x 42 3/8″ framed ) ………….. $1,695.00
In the foreground, the two fisherman eagerly await the arrival of a wooden lake boat at the rocky shore. Laden with fishing rods and bags, they appear ready for a big catch. Behind them lies blue-grey water, reflecting the clouds above. Despite this greyness, the actual sky itself is a pale blue, similar in colour to the lake just beyond the grassy islands in the distance. Also in the background lies a distant mountain range of the Irish landscape, an element of nature often seen in Hill’s paintings of his homeland.
Rowland Hill was born in Belfast where he attended the Belfast College of Arts. At age 16, three of his oils paintings were accepted for exhibition at the Royal Ulster Academy. In 1964 he was elected as an Associate of the Royal Ulster Academy (ARUA) and exhibited a total of 17 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) between 1935 and 1966. Hill resided just north of Belfast in Jordanstown, County Antrim and often went on painting excursions with fellow artist Theo Gracey and Padraic Woods. His paintings were sold locally through the Magee Gallery of Belfast and the Cooling Galleries of London and their Toronto location.
