This painting is titled with the historical indigenous name Naas, a Tlingit name referencing the regions rich supply of fish. Today however the name of the river is commonly spelt as Nass.
The mouth of the Nass River is located approximately 75 km northwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. In the late 1700’s The Hudson’s Bay Company established trading near the mouth of the Naas River. In 1887 this trading had been replaced by canneries, which employed both Chinese and Nisga’a workers until closing in 1928. Today the Nass River is best known for it’s sport fishing and the imposing mountains and forest of the valley are the home of the Nisga’a people.
Born 1902 in Hamiota, Manitoba, Ronald Jackson is well known for his British Columbia’s coastal views which more often than not detail a small fishing vessel. He was a graduate of the Slade School of London where he won the Slade School of Fine Art Duveen Award. He further studied at the Grand Chaumier, Paris and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. He received Government commissions from the United Kingdom, Government of Canada and Provincial Government of British Columbia. The artist lived most of his life in Vancouver, British Columbia, was a member of the International Oceanographic Foundation, the British Columbia Society of Artists, and a founding member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists.
