In this tranquil scene, two loons glide across glassy waters, an elegant example of Renato Muccillo’s early wildlife work. Painted during his photorealistic phase in the late 1980s–early ’90s, the piece reflects his precision, textural mastery, and the influence of Robert Bateman. According to the previous owner, it was used to produce a limited edition series of fifty prints.
Renato Muccillo (b. 1965) began his career as a self-taught Canadian wildlife painter, creating remarkably detailed, photorealistic depictions of animals that quickly drew national attention. Influenced by the precision and naturalism of Robert Bateman, Muccillo’s early works captured the vitality of North American fauna and were reproduced as limited-edition prints, making their way into private collections across Canada. His deep respect for the natural world—shaped by a childhood spent outdoors—provided a strong foundation for the evolution of his artistic voice.
In the mid-1990s, Muccillo shifted focus toward landscape painting, seeking to capture not only the subjects of nature but also its atmosphere, light, and mood. Today, his luminous depictions of the Fraser Valley and beyond blend Old Master glazing techniques with a contemporary sensibility, often balancing tranquil beauty with subtle reminders of human presence. Exhibited in Canada and internationally, his work resonates with collectors for its technical mastery, emotional depth, and timeless quality—marking Muccillo as a distinctive voice in modern Canadian painting.
