A Consecutive-Year Story of Two Marks: The Secret Shared by a Silver Set
This pair of sterling silver pepperettes, matched by pattern number B1346, offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in the renowned William Comyns & Sons workshop. While physically identical in their elegant form, the hallmarks reveal a story of familial transition in London, 1925–1926.
One piece, hallmarked with the letter “k” (1925), bears the RC maker’s mark of Richard Comyns. The companion piece, marked with the letter “l” (1926), features the transitional C&R / C mark adopted following the passing of his brother and partner, Charles, in late 1925. Produced in consecutive years, these pieces, which are detailed in the sources, reflect the continuity of Comyns’ craftsmanship through a period of loss, with both pieces sharing the same design legacy, as noted in the sources.
