An exquisite floral still life, composed of thickly applied paint using powerful confident brushstrokes. This work show a very heavy influence on the artist by the Group of Seven. Signed in the paint lower right and appears to be dated starting with either a 3 or 5 (illegible date). At one time the painting was either pinned into a framed or pinned in place while being painted as there are four tiny holes in each corner. The work is set in a period frame that measures approximately 15” x 13”.
Canadian artist Orval Clinton Madden studied at the O.C.A. ( Ontario College of Arts ) under P. C. Sheppard, J. W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, W. Cruikshank and G. A. Reid. He worked as a commercial artist and was a member of the G.A.C. ( Graphics Arts Club ). He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy from 1932 to 1941, Art Association of Montreal from 1933 to 1939, C.N.E., Ontario Society of Artist, and the Graphic Arts Club.
