Johann Saarniit was born in Estonia in May 1909. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Tallinn, Estonia graduating in 1932. He furthered his studies in Germany, Poland, Finland and Sweden while exhibiting his works. The artist immigrated to Canada in 1948, later being employed at Wolfe Brothers as an artist and designer. Saarniit started his own art gallery in Toronto in Sunnybrook Plaza on Eglinton Avenue. Joann Saarniit passed away in Toronto, Ontario in 1984.
