Title: ” Evening Sky – Lake Kushog “
Size: 10″ x 12″ ( 16″ x 18″ framed ) ………….. SOLD!!!
In 1940, the Gauthiers purchased “Logholm Cottage”, purportedly the first built cottage on the south end of Lake Kushog. This retreat — with its surrounding countryside —offered ample subject material for the artist, such as this one.
Gauthier worked as a commercial artist at Sampson Matthews Limited, Toronto, from 1927 to 1961. Here, he would meet and work alongside the likes of J.E.H. MacDonald, Franklin Carmichael and A. J. Casson. Carmichael and Casson then became frequent painting companions of Gauthier, especially “Cass” (Casson).
Gauthier was an active member and frequent exhibitor of numerous Canadian art societies such as:
- Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour – CSPW (1931 – 1941).
- Ontario Society of Artists – OSA (1933).
- Arts and Letters Club, Toronto – ALCT (1935, 1936 and 1975 – 1982).
- Royal Canadian Academy of Arts – ARCA / RCA (Associate 1946, Academician 1974).
