Apart from his studies abroad, Jack Humphrey spent the greater part of his life in his hometown working full-time as a painter in and around the Saint John area. This watercolour scene (circa 1936), depicts a derelict wharf at low tide. There is also a distant city outlined in the background, possibly Saint John.

Born and raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jack Humphrey studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under Philip Hale from 1920-23, National Academy of Design in New York under Charles Hawthorne from 1924-1929, and briefly in Paris at the Grande Chaumiere in the latter part of 1929.

Humphrey was also a member of the Canadian Group of Painters, Eastern Group of Painters, Contemporary Arts Society, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts.
