Although deForest early brush work was more traditional in style, latter in life, he produced a number splendid impressionist palette knife paintings such as ” SCENE IN NOVA SCOTIA “. Completed in 1923 shortly before the artist death on March of 1924. Since the artist had moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1921, this painting was probably based on a earlier sketch made while visiting the eastern province.
Born in New Brunswick, deForest studied at the South Kensington School of Art, London and the Julién Acadamy, Paris. Dedicated to a life of art, he was also an avid traveler painting his far reaching worldly destinations. Furthermore, he was very instrumental in the development of early British Columbia’s art society and one of Vancouver’s leading artist in his day.

He represented Canada with the Canadian Department of Fine Art at the World’s Columbian Exhibition 1893, exhibition #30 -Valley of the Wauganni River, at Evening, N.Z. , his given address was St. John, N.B.
