
Best known for his earlier smooth flowing works in oil of the Laurentian landscapes before he became more commercialized producing “pointy” coniferous treed landscapes.
Born on December 11, 1901 in Edinburgh Scotland, Norwell’s family emigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1914 with his family, latter settling in Kingston, Ontario. Norwell studied under Arthur Lismer, George Reid, J.W. Beatty and Robert Holmes at the Ontario College of Art. Latter traveled to Europe, briefly studying under Augustus Edwin John. The artist exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1921-1943 and the Art Association of Montreal in 1922-1943. Norwell died in 1967 in Sainte-Agathe,Quebec
