Canadian – American artist, George Thomson is probably best known for being the eldest brother of Canada’s beloved artist Tom Thomson whom had inspired the Group of Seven but had his painting career tragically cut short. George however enjoyed a lengthy lifetime of painting and was once known as Canada’s oldest active professional artist still painting at the age of 97. He studied at the Art Students League in New York, then at the Lyme Artist’s Colony in Connecticut under Frank V. Dumond, W. L. Lathrop and H. R. Poore. The vast majority of his Canadian works are landscapes of Georgian Bay, Haliburton Highlands and Muskoka region sometimes sketching in the company of fellow artist John Corfe and Horace Vick. His works were represented at the J. Merritt Maloney Galleries on Grenville Street, Toronto, then at the G. Blair Laing Galleries on Bloor Street, Toronto from 1936 to 1951.
An elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists exhibiting in 1913, 1915, 1929 to 1937 & 1940. He also exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy of Art, showing in 1918, 1919, 1929 to 1937, 1939 to 1941, 1943 to 1945, 1948 & 1950. In addition, he also exhibited at the Montreal Art Association, the Western Ontario Exhibition and in the United States at the National Academy of Design in New York as well at the Art Institute of Chicago. His works are held in the National Art Gallery of Canada, Art Gallery of Ontario and numerous private collections. In 1996, the Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery in Owen Sound presented a major retrospective of his work.
