Operating out of Flemington, New Jersey, Fulper Pottery introduced its historic “Vasekraft” art pottery line in 1909, quickly cementing itself as a titan of the American Arts & Crafts movement. The company earned international renown for its heavy structural forms and its revolutionary, ancient-inspired flambé, crystalline, and volcanic glaze formulas.
This commanding 8 1/4″ vase is a magnificent example of Fulper’s classical, Grecian-inspired amphora silhouettes. Unlike standard low-shouldered models, this advanced shape boasts a proud, straight cylindrical collar neck flanked by two separately applied architectural loop handles. The glaze work is a tour de force of early 20th-century ceramic art, masterfully contrasting fluid, glass-like aqua and blue flambé slips against a deeply rugged, crawling volcanic dark base layer.
