Description
An exceptional and highly dramatic example of late 19th-century British art pottery. This monumental 15 3/4” earthenware display charger features a gripping naturalistic scene depicting two majestic eagles descending upon a three swans amidst dense riverbank reeds and wild flora.
The composition captures the essence of the late-Victorian aesthetic obsession with high-drama wildlife narratives—expertly rendered with fine brushwork, layered mineral oxides, and a complex tonal palette. The scene is framed by its original, elegant gilded border, which now exhibits a beautifully aged, soft patina along the outer edge.
This piece was meticulously hand-painted by the listed freelance ceramic decorator W. J. Thomas, whose crisp cursive signature and distinct trailing line flourish are signed prominently at the bottom left of center. During this golden era of English art pottery, master decorators regularly purchased high-quality blank chargers from premium Staffordshire firms to paint and fire independently in small studio kilns. As a unique studio commission, it remains an irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind collector’s item.
Condition
Excellent Antique Condition. The structural integrity of the ceramic body is flawless, with completely smooth edges and no chips, fractures, or restorations. The glaze exhibits authentic, tight, all-over network glaze crazing and a minor inherent bubbly kiln mark in the glaze near the tail feather of the lower swan – both consistent with 140-year-old English earthenware attesting to an authentic period piece. The outer rim retains its authentic Victorian gold leaf trim, showing gentle, honest surface wear from historic handling. One unglazed area on the back of the charger.
Display Information
The charger features its original factory-drilled hanging loops built directly into the reverse foot rim. These built-in cutouts allow wire to be threaded smoothly through the earthenware frame so the plate can hang securely and completely flush against a wall for display.
