“However, it is in the flower paintings that her most characteristic work appears – the bold brushwork and gorgeous color which make each canvas a delight.” …….Artist Clare Bice former student of Eva Bradshaw.
Eva Theresa Bradshaw was born in 1871 in London, Ontario which she would reside in for most of her life. Despite training as a nurse, she would become not only one of the city’s most cherished artist, but a prominent leader and educator of the arts in the region. A painter of the impressionist style, she is best know for her portraits and floral paintings. She studied under John and James Griffiths, whom had immigrated to Canada from the UK. Both brothers had been trained as floral painters by the Royal Doulton works. John would latter found the Western School of Art and Design in London, Ontario, while James was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy.
In 1900, Bradshaw started studying under Florence Carlyle in London’s Masonic Temple building. Here Carlyle was teaching a new style of brushwork she had learned during her 6 years of training abroad at the Parisian Art Academies. Carlyle had already achieved great success and recognition as an artist, she was awarded a silver medal at the 1893 Chicago’s World Fair and made ARCA member in 1897, a rare event in the male dominated art world. Of all people, Carlyle probably had the greatest influence on Bradshaw’s style, kindness as an art instructor and promoter of the arts in London.
Bradshaw also studied for a short time in New York under the portraiture artist Robert Henri.
Bradshaw’s early recognition came in 1901 when she painted the proscenium arch for the stage at the Grand Theatre. She exhibited the following works at Royal Canadian Academy;
1902 #18 Violets and #19 Roses
1903 #18 Roses and #18a Daises
1904 #21 Roses and #22 Violets
1906 #8 Pink Roses, #9 Yellow Roses and #10 Grapes
1907 #21 Study of Cherries
1920 #21 and #22 Still Life
Her painting “PLUMS” was exhibited as #19 on behalf of the Canadian Art Section of Fine Arts at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, England 1924. Eva Bradshaw was a member of the Western Art League for over three decades, made an honorary member in 1915 and served as it’s treasurer for numerous years.
