This charming 1931 Quebec winter scene was designed by Group of Seven member Edwin Holgate for William Coutts’s “ Painters of Canada Series “ Christmas cards. Twenty-six of Canada’s leading artist were paid $25 for each design selected for the edition. Each silkscreen illustration required a different screen cut out for every colour, making it a costly and tedious process. Unfortunately, the timing of the release which coincided with the Great Depression greatly limited the amount of sales, making them rare and thus an item highly sought after by collectors. There have been two exhibitions held by the National Archives of Canada displaying Coutts’ 1931 “ Painters of Canada Series “ Christmas Cards, one was in 1984, the other in 1991.
