Neighick Lake was Edith Grace Coombs summer retreat: an area rich in flora and fauna with a scenic lake view. Overlooking the hillside, she produced “Drift-wind, Neighick Lake” a sketch illustrated in Lorne Pierce’s E. Grace Coombs. James Sharp Lawson, the artist’s husband, prepared the catalogue raisonne for the book which includes “Driftwinds”, the painting of the aforementioned sketch. It was listed on page 26 as catalogue raisonne number [212], exhibited in Toronto.

Coombs studied at the Ontario College of Arts (OCA) from 1913 to 1918, receiving numerous scholarships along the way. By 1921, she had become an associate instructor there, remaining at the institution until 1956.  In 1928, she became an elected member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Coombs was also a member of both the Canadian Society of Graphic Artists and the Federation of Canadian Artists. A capable artist comfortable painting in both oil and watercolour, Coombs also exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy, Canadian National Exhibition, Montreal Art Association and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.
