David Goines wood turning with a live edge burled wood maple bowl on a pedestal base. The height is approximately 3 5/16” high, 4 3/4” across with a wall thickness of about 1/8”. The piece is signed Goines, Maple and dated 3. 96. Goines was a North Carolina artist well known for his fine wood turnings produced in his mountain studio. Furthermore, he was a key mentor of modern day wood master Charles Farrar who recently passed away. This piece with it’s live edge, thin wall and being made from a burl would definitely offer it’s technical challenges.

Armed with a chain saw, he roams the woods in search of the elusive tree burl – the hard knotty outgrowth he captures and transforms into a work of delight.
Making his first lathe from spare parts, David Goines is a determined, self-taught woodturner from the mountains of North Carolina. Born and raised in Atlanta, he found his niche in the beautiful Highlands-Cashiers resort area, with a wealth of indigenous hardwoods to tickle his turning fancy. Although the woodlands there are his main resource, he’s been known to scrounge up a truckload of wooden treasure in his travels on the art show circuit.
Turning with a reverence that reveals the natural qualities found within the wood, David is also on the cutting edge of new techniques and new directions that include mixed media. He is deftly assisted in the wokshop and the field by his wife, Rae. Their philosophy is a simple one: God made the wood and bestows the talent, and to Him they give the glory…
Organic, sensual, pristine, classic, whimiscal; all attempts at description of the multifaceted work of lathe artist David Goines. Each vessel has a theme of its own, whether the timeless line and design of ancient Greece, or the feel of a freshly unearthed pre-Columbian artifact of stone or clay. Both functional and sculptural in form, David’s work is primarily fashioned of foraged native American hardwoods, the richly figured burl of the tree being most highly prized. Many of his raw materials are so intense in grain and coloring that they boldly dominate the design of the piece. This artist has become known for his sensitivity and delicate treatment of such a strong media, whether in a jagged, bark-edged opening or a subtle, expressive form.
David Goines is a firm believer in promoting woodturning as an art form, and avails himself as a teacher, lecturer and demonstrator. He is an active member of the American Association of Woodturners, participating in the local Georgia and North Carolina chapters. He has exhibited his work in the following art shows:
