This mid-century landscape by Canadian Impressionist Daniel Izzard captures the rugged terrain of the Canadian wilderness. Dated circa 1965, a pivotal transitional year when Izzard moved his studio from Toronto to West Vancouver, the composition features a turbulent whitewater creek cutting through fractured granite and river boulders.
The work beautifully highlights Izzard’s signature bold brushwork and structural impasto texturing. He applies thick, sweeping layers of soft cream, muted ice-blue, and pale grey to build out the physical weight and motion of the frothing currents. The surrounding rock formations are rendered in complex, blended tones of deep plum, warm taupe, and subtle ochre.
The painting remains in pristine condition, housed in its original rustic wooden gallery frame with a fabric linen liner. It is signed by the artist in his distinct red script in the lower-left corner and titled The Little Rapids on the reverse vintage “Georgian” canvas board, manufactured in Canada under license from George Rowney & Co. Artist Biography
Daniel J. Izzard, FCA, OIP (1923–2007), was a British-born Canadian Impressionist painter. Born in London, England, he moved to Canada in 1952 and established himself as a professional artist, becoming known for landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, portraits and figurative works. He settled in West Vancouver in 1965 and painted professionally for more than fifty years, drawing inspiration from extensive travels throughout Canada and abroad. Izzard was a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), serving on its Board of Governors, and of the Ontario Institute of Painters (OIP). He exhibited his work in more than fifty solo exhibitions. His paintings are particularly noted for their emphasis on light, a quality he regarded as central to his artistic vision.
