A substantial and beautifully resolved mid-century Canadian impressionist landscape, “Flow Gently“ is an original oil on masonite by listed artist Clifton Wellington Greer (1904–1986). Measuring 24″ x 30″ and housed in a 28″ x 34″ wooden gallery frame, the painting depicts a light-dappled Credit River stream cutting through the rugged, forested landscape of the Caledon Hills near Belfountain, Ontario.

True to the teachings of his Group of Seven mentors, Greer utilizes highly tactile, rhythmic brushstrokes to capture the raw movement and seasonal light of the local wilderness. Hand-signed on the lower-left face and titled on the reverse with his permanent studio registration, this painting represents an exceptional acquisition with excellent regional provenance.

About the Artist:

Clifton Wellington Greer (Canadian, 1904–1986) studied fine art at the Ontario College of Art (OCA) under pioneering Group of Seven members J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer, alongside notable landscape painters Frederick Haines and L.A.C. Panton. Residing and painting out of his studio in the historic Lorne Park area of Mississauga, Ontario, Greer focused intently on plein-air oil landscapes. He famously asserted that a great painting should “hold the mirror up to life, reflecting an enhanced beauty—truth without distortion”. His vibrant, textured works were exhibited across major Canadian cities, earning him national recognition for his atmospheric interpretations of regional scenery.
