Clifton Wellington Greer 1904-1986
Beautiful sun lite winter scene, probably painted on site, very similar to Group of Seven member Frank (Franz) Johnston.
Oil on masonite panel measures approximately 10” x 12”, frame measures approximately 14 3/8” x 16 3/8”. Painting is signed lower left “C W Greer “ and is one of his best works.
Canadian artist Clifton Wellington Greer was born in Toronto in 1904. He studied art at OCA under Lismer, MacDonald, Panton, and F.S. Haines. His chief interest was landscapes in oil. He believed that “a great painting, should hold the mirror up to life, reflecting an enhanced beauty,i.e. truth without distortion.”
Clifton held exhibitions in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary and other parts of Canada where “he is recognized throughout the country for his magnificent Canadian landscapes.” He lived in Lorne Park, Toronto.
