This atmospheric seascape by Italian painter Cavalier Michele Federico captures the dramatic coastline of Capri, a subject for which the artist became particularly renowned. Powerful waves surge against a rugged cliff face beneath a turbulent sky, while a break in the clouds reveals a luminous band of golden light across the horizon. The contrast between the storm-darkened sea and the warm glow of the setting sun creates a compelling sense of movement, depth, and atmosphere.
Executed with confident brushwork, Federico skillfully conveys both the energy of the sea and the changing Mediterranean light that made Capri one of his most celebrated subjects. Particularly noteworthy is the artist’s handling of the sky, where thinly applied paint allows the warm tone and subtle grain of the underlying panel to remain visible. This technique enhances the luminosity of the sunset glow and contributes to the painting’s atmospheric quality.
The painting is presented in its original ornate carved and gilded gallery frame, which complements the work’s period character and presentation.
